Our verdict

The 50021 is the only boxed kit we found that splits a lawn into two zones from one hose faucet. Orbit’s product page lists a two-outlet digital hose faucet timer, twelve gear-drive sprinklers, 250 ft of Blu-Lock tubing with push-on fittings, auto drain valves, a tubing cutter and a 200 lb pressure gauge. Each timer outlet feeds its own zone with its own run time (1 to 240 minutes, every 6 hours to every 7 days), and the timer has a manual rain delay.

Orbit rates it for up to about 2,500 sq ft, twice its one-zone Orbit 50020, and the sprinklers adjust from 15 to 25 ft and from 40 to 360 degrees with the water on or off. The catches: Orbit asks more of the faucet than Rain Bird does (at least 50 psi and 5 gpm), links no installation manual on the kit page, and splits its warranty by part. It is our pick for larger lawns in the best DIY sprinkler kits; all five kits are in the sprinkler system kit comparison.

Water supply and layout

Test before you buy. Orbit asks for at least 50 psi and 5 gpm at the faucet. To read static pressure, Orbit has you fit a gauge to the outside faucet nearest the water meter, with no other water running in the house; our guide to measuring water pressure and flow adds the bucket test for flow. Orbit’s sizing rule is simple: the heads running at once must not use more water than the supply gives. Set the two outlets to different start times so each zone gets the faucet to itself.

Orbit links no manual on the kit page, so burial depth and the number of heads per run are not stated. Our guides to heads per zone and how deep to bury sprinkler pipe cover the general rules.

Before you dig: request a utility locate a few business days ahead, through 811 in the US or your province’s one-call center via Click Before You Dig in Canada, however shallow the trench.

Warranty, winter and Canada

Orbit’s warranty table does not list kits. It gives 5 years for underground pop-up and gear-drive sprinklers and 6 years for hose-end timers, but 0 years for underground accessories and connections. In freezing areas, take the timer off the faucet, shake the water out, remove the batteries and store it somewhere dry and heated. The auto drain valves let the buried tubing empty, and Orbit still recommends a professional blowout of buried lines before winter; our winterizing guide covers both.

Orbit’s Canadian online store lists the kit but charges in US dollars, so we show no Canadian price. We read only one owner review we could use, on Orbit’s own store, which is too little to say how the kit holds up.

Orbit 50021 questions

Should both zones of the Orbit 50021 run at once?

No. Orbit’s sizing rule is that the heads running at the same time must not use more water than the supply gives, and the kit already asks for 50 psi and 5 gpm at the faucet. Give the two timer outlets different start times, leaving the first zone’s run time between them, so each zone has the faucet’s full flow.

What water pressure does the Orbit 50021 need?

At least 50 psi and 5 gpm at the faucet, by Orbit’s product page. Use the gauge in the box on the outside faucet nearest the water meter, with nothing else running in the house. Orbit gives 20 to 100 psi as the working range of its hose-end products and suggests a pressure reducer where the supply runs higher.

Can I buy the Orbit 50021 in Canada?

Orbit’s Canadian online store lists it, but it prices in US dollars, so we show no Canadian price. We could not read Home Depot Canada or the other large Canadian chains to confirm a listing under this model number. Canadian buyers should plan a full fall shutdown: timer indoors, and the buried lines drained or blown out by a professional.
