Our verdict

The 50020 is Orbit’s basic in-ground kit for a hose faucet, and the plain-timer twin of the app-controlled Orbit 50024. Orbit’s product page lists a one-outlet digital hose faucet timer, six high-efficiency gear-drive sprinklers, Blu-Lock tubing with push-on fittings, auto drain valves, a tubing cutter and a 200 lb pressure gauge. Each sprinkler throws 15 to 25 ft and turns anywhere from 40 degrees to a full circle, adjustable with the water on or off, and Orbit rates the kit for up to about 1,250 sq ft depending on pressure and flow.

It does the job for a modest lawn without an app, and Orbit’s warranty on plain hose timers is three times what it gives B-hyve parts. Against it: Orbit wants at least 50 psi at the faucet, it states no tubing length or part numbers and links no manual, and it is one zone only (the two-zone version is the Orbit 50021). Compare all five in our sprinkler system kit comparison.

Water supply and setup

Orbit asks you to test the faucet before installing: at least 50 psi and 5 gpm. That is more pressure than the Rain Bird kits ask for (40 psi), though less flow (they want 6 gpm). Fit the gauge in the box to the outside faucet nearest the water meter with no other water running; our guide to measuring water pressure and flow covers the bucket test as well. The timer needs no app: runs of 1 to 240 minutes, intervals from 6 hours to 7 days, and a manual rain delay. Blu-Lock fittings need no solvent or sealant tape, and their quick-release collars come apart if you want to move a head later.

Before you dig: request a utility locate a few business days ahead, through 811 in the US or your province’s one-call center via Click Before You Dig in Canada, however shallow the trench.

Warranty, winter and owners

Orbit’s warranty table lists 5 years for underground sprinklers and 6 years for hose-end timers, but 0 years for underground accessories and connections; kits as such are not listed. In freezing areas, take the timer off the faucet, shake out the water, remove the batteries and store it indoors. Orbit recommends a professional blowout for the buried lines even with the drain valves; our winterizing guide explains why.

We read six owner reviews on Orbit’s own store, too few and from one seller, so there is no owner summary. Most called the kit easy to put in. One owner found spare parts for the system hard to find and order, and one found the box short of parts for their layout.

Orbit 50020 questions

How big a lawn can the Orbit 50020 water?

Up to about 1,250 sq ft, by Orbit’s rating, depending on water pressure and flow. That assumes the faucet gives at least 50 psi and 5 gpm, which Orbit asks you to test first. For more lawn from one faucet, Orbit’s two-zone 50021 doubles the sprinklers and the rated area, while Rain Bird’s 32ETI asks for less pressure but more flow.

Does the Orbit 50020 timer need Wi-Fi or an app?

No. It is a plain digital hose faucet timer: runs from 1 to 240 minutes, intervals from 6 hours to 7 days, and a manual rain delay, all set on the timer. If you want app scheduling and weather updates, Orbit sells the same kind of kit with a B-hyve Wi-Fi timer and hub as the 50024, with a shorter warranty on those parts.

Do the 50020 drain valves make winterizing unnecessary?

Not entirely. The auto drain valves let the buried tubing empty to help prevent freeze damage, but Orbit still recommends blowing the lines out before winter and suggests hiring a professional to do it. The timer must come off the faucet too: shake out the water, take the batteries out and store it somewhere dry and heated.
