How we choose

We pick products from manufacturers’ specs and manuals, retailer prices and owner-reported problems, not from who pays us. We don’t install or test every kit in a yard of our own, and we say so whenever we haven’t used one ourselves.

Our method in four steps

  1. Start from what decides the result at home: the water pressure and flow your faucet or main line can supply, how many zones you need, and how the system will be programmed. We write that down before looking at any model.
  2. Read each maker’s manual, installation guide and spec sheet, and compare the specs side by side, not the marketing claims.
  3. Check prices at several retailers in the US and Canada and show the date we checked.
  4. Revisit the list when prices move, a model is replaced or owners report a recurring problem.

What we don’t do: install and test every product ourselves. When we have used one, the review says so.

What we compare

Each category has a fixed set of lead specs, chosen for what changes the result in your yard, and every product in the category is compared on the same specs, in the same order:

  • Sprinkler system kits: the minimum pressure and flow the kit needs, the area it covers, zones, heads, tubing and whether a timer and backflow device are in the box.
  • Drip irrigation kits: emitters and tubing, coverage, and whether the kit includes the pressure regulator, filter and backflow device that drip needs at the faucet.
  • Sprinkler controllers: zones, Wi-Fi, weather-based skipping, buttons on the unit, sensor inputs, the EPA WaterSense label and the warranty.
  • Hose timers: outlets, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and whether a hub is needed, weather skipping, power, the pressure range and the warranty.

Rules on digging, backflow prevention, permits and watering days come from official sources: 811 in the US, the Click Before You Dig centers in Canada, the EPA, state and provincial regulators and local water utilities. Those rules vary by town and change, so our guides cite them as examples with their date and ask you to check with your own utility.

Our score is editorial, out of 10, and based on that research: value within the category, warranty and documentation, how well the product suits a do-it-yourself install, and recurring owner complaints or praise we read. It is never shown as stars, because stars read as customer reviews.

What owners say

Where we summarize what owners report, we read a modest sample of owner reviews and forum posts by hand, on sites that allow it, and write the summary in our own words. We leave out reviews written for a coupon or a discount. Each summary names its sources and how many items we read, and a person checks it before it appears. Owner reports are what owners chose to post, so we treat them as experiences, never as failure rates.

What we don’t do

  • We don’t install and test every product or claim hands-on testing that didn’t happen.
  • We don’t accept payment to include, rank or remove a product.
  • We don’t show a price as current once it is out of date: older prices say when they were last checked.
  • We don’t tell you a permit, a backflow device or a locate request can be skipped. Where the rules are local, we say so.

How often we update

Prices are checked by hand at least once a week until retailers send us price feeds, which update daily, and every price shows the date it was checked. Guides and picks are reviewed every six months, or sooner when a model is replaced, and seasonal guides such as winterizing are rechecked before each season. The “Updated” date on a page changes only when its content or prices changed, and each page notes what changed.

How we use AI

We use AI tools to help draft pages and to summarize the owner reviews we read. Specs come from manufacturers, prices from retailers and rules from official sources, and a person reviews every page before it is published.

We research every product from manufacturers’ published specs, retailer listings and owner reviews. Pages are drafted with the help of AI tools, then checked against those sources and edited before they go live, and prices are rechecked regularly. We don’t lab-test products, and we say so.

How we make money

Some retailer links earn us a commission. It never decides what we recommend or the order we list products in. Read our affiliate disclosure.
