Our verdict

Eve Aqua is the hose timer for households that run their home through Apple Home. It appears there as a sprinkler, so Siri, the Home app, automations and the Eve app can all start and stop it. Its schedules are stored on the controller itself, up to seven start times a day on the days you choose, and they run with no phone, hub or internet connection.

The hardware is where it falls behind the other timers here. Eve rates it for 14.5 to 72.5 psi, the lowest maximum of the seven we compare; its spec gives a G 3/4 in (26.5 mm) faucet thread without mentioning US garden hose thread; and skipping for rain relies on an Apple Shortcut rather than being built in. It needs an iPhone or iPad, and Eve gives a two-year warranty on units bought from its own store or an authorized reseller.

Faucet thread and water pressure

Eve’s US spec sheet lists the faucet connection as G 3/4 in (26.5 mm), and its FAQ says that thread suits almost every standard outdoor faucet. None of Eve’s pages calls it US garden hose thread, the 3/4 in hose thread the Orbit, Rachio and Rain Bird timers here list, so treat the first fitting as a check (see the questions below).

The pressure limit matters more. At 5 bar (72.5 psi) maximum, Eve Aqua is outside its rating on any supply that runs higher, so check your static pressure with a gauge before buying; our guide to measuring water pressure and flow shows how.

Apple Home and Thread

An iPhone or iPad controls it over Bluetooth near the house, and an Apple home hub adds control from anywhere. For Thread, the sturdier mesh connection, that hub has to be a HomePod mini, a second-generation HomePod or an Apple TV 4K (second generation, or the 128 GB third generation); a first-generation HomePod or an older Apple TV (fourth generation or later) gives remote access and automations without Thread. Water use in the Eve app is an estimate from a flow rate you enter, not a measurement. The few third-generation owners we could read used Home Assistant, where two found the default run-time setting missing or lost.

Winter, backflow and where to buy

Eve rates it IPX4 with UV protection, but it must not freeze. At the end of the season, unscrew it, clean it, open the valve, take the batteries out and let it dry before storing it indoors; our winterizing guide covers the rest of the yard. Eve’s pages say nothing about backflow prevention. The usual minimum is a hose bibb vacuum breaker that screws onto the faucet (EPA’s cross-connection control manual describes it), but your water utility sets the rules; our backflow preventer guide explains the types. Eve sells it from its US store and has no Canadian store; it lists the same model for the US and Canada, but we found no Canadian retailer we could check. Compare it with the other picks in our best hose timers guide and every hose timer we compare.

Eve Aqua Smart Water Controller (3rd generation) questions

Will Eve Aqua fit a US outdoor faucet?

Eve says it should: its G 3/4 in (26.5 mm) thread, by Eve’s account, suits almost every standard outdoor faucet. But none of Eve’s pages mentions US garden hose thread, the thread the other timers here list. Screw it on fully by hand, without tools, and check that nothing leaks with the valve closed. If it binds or drips, stop and contact Eve support before using it.

Does Eve Aqua need a hub?

Not for everyday use. An iPhone or iPad nearby controls it over Bluetooth, and its schedules run from the device itself. Control from away from home, automations, notifications and the Thread connection all need an Apple home hub, such as a HomePod mini or an Apple TV 4K. A mains-powered Thread device such as an Eve Energy plug placed near the faucet can relay its signal.

Does Eve Aqua work with Android or Alexa?

Not according to Eve’s own page, which lists an iPhone or iPad with current iOS or iPadOS as a requirement and names Apple Home, the Eve app and Siri as the ways to control it. Eve says Matter support will come with a future software update but gives no date. If you use Android, Alexa or Google Home, choose another timer.

Can Eve Aqua skip watering when it rains?

Not by itself. Since version 4.4 the Eve app offers a ready-made Apple Shortcut that suspends the stored schedules when the forecast shows rain, which you install from inside the app. You can also pause watering for today or tomorrow by long-pressing the Eve Aqua tile, or set a schedule suspension under Exceptions in the schedule settings.
