Our score: 8.2 out of 10 Research-based, not lab-tested

Updated

$75.95–$99.99

Pros

  • Four outlets, each with its own start time, run time and interval
  • Program at the faucet, over Bluetooth, or over Wi-Fi with the Gen 2 hub
  • Rated for 10 to 100 psi water pressure
  • Switches itself off on low batteries rather than dying mid-run
  • Two-year B-hyve warranty when bought from an authorized dealer

Cons

  • Wi-Fi and weather adjustment need the Gen 2 hub (bundled as 24639 in the US)
  • Water-resistant, not waterproof: Orbit says to dry it if water gets in
  • Has to come indoors for winter; Orbit's warranty excludes freeze damage
Best for
Running several hoses, soaker lines or drip zones from one outdoor faucet on different schedules.
Not for
A single sprinkler on one hose, where the 1-outlet XD does the same job with less hardware on the faucet.

Our verdict

The 4-outlet XD (24634) turns one outdoor faucet into four watering zones. Each outlet keeps its own start time, run length and interval, so a lawn sprinkler, a soaker hose and two drip lines can each run on the schedule that suits them. You set them with the dial and a zone button at the timer, or from the B-hyve app over Bluetooth.

Everything else matches the single-outlet B-hyve XD: a 10 to 100 psi rating, a 2.5 to 9 gpm flow range, two AA alkaline batteries, and an automatic switch to OFF when they run low, so a run cannot stall halfway with the water on. Wi-Fi, remote control and weather-based adjustment come from Orbit’s Gen 2 hub (part 21027), sold separately or, in the US, boxed with this timer as the 24639. Orbit’s two-year B-hyve warranty applies, and it costs much less than four single-outlet timers.

Programming four outlets

Set the clock and outlet 1 first, as on the single XD. For outlets 2 to 4, turn the dial to Start Time and press the zone button to pick the outlet; the zone number on the display shows which one you are setting. Then set its start time, run length and how often it waters, in days. Manual runs work the same way: check the zone on the display, press the zone button to change outlet, then start. Orbit’s quick start guide does not say whether two outlets can water at the same time, so give each outlet its own start time, and ask Orbit before buying if you need two running at once.

What owners report

We found only four owners of this exact model on sites that allow our reading, because Orbit’s store pools reviews across every XD version and many recent ones were written for a discount. Their reports are mixed. One runs a soaker hose, two sprinklers and a bed line from the four outlets, and another says it ended early-morning hose moving through a hot, dry summer. Against that, one owner’s unit still works after several years but now leaks at the inlet, and another had one outlet stop working within a couple of years. Four owners are too few to judge how long it lasts.

Leaks, backflow and winter

For a leak at the faucet, Orbit’s help center suggests rinsing the inlet filter, reseating the cone-shaped screen washer and refitting the timer hand-tight without cross-threading. There is no backflow preventer inside, and Orbit says to add one; requirements differ by town, so check with your water utility and see our backflow preventer explainer. At the end of the season take the timer in, drain it, remove the batteries and set the app’s run mode to Off, as our winterizing guide describes. Orbit’s Canadian store sells the same 24634 but prices it in US dollars, so we show no Canadian price. Compare it with the other picks in our best hose timers guide or all the hose timers we compare.

Orbit B-hyve XD 4-Outlet Smart Hose Timer questions

Can each outlet on the B-hyve XD 4-outlet have its own schedule?

Yes. Orbit’s quick start guide programs outlets 2 to 4 the same way as outlet 1: press the zone button to choose the outlet, then set its start time, run length and interval. The display shows the zone number while you work, and each outlet keeps its own program, including its own watering days.

Do I need the hub for the 4-outlet XD?

Only for Wi-Fi. Without the Gen 2 hub (part 21027) you program it at the timer or over Bluetooth when your phone is in range. The hub adds control from anywhere and weather-based adjustment, needs a 2.4 GHz network, and can serve up to 16 B-hyve devices, so one hub covers several timers around the house.

Why is no water coming out of my B-hyve XD?

Start with power. Orbit suggests turning the faucet off, removing the battery tray for 30 seconds and refitting it fully, then fitting new batteries and resetting the timer if that fails. If the valve still will not open, its support site describes covering the outlet with your thumb, turning the water on and starting a manual run until you feel a click.

What warranty does the 4-outlet XD have?

Two years, like every B-hyve device, according to Orbit’s help center, provided it was bought from an authorized dealer. The warranty does not cover freeze damage, so bring the timer indoors before freezing weather. If it leaks at the faucet even after you have cleaned the filter and reseated the washer, Orbit’s support site leads you into its warranty replacement process.
