Programs three ways (the dial at the faucet, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi through Orbit's Gen 2 hub) and handles 10 to 100 psi, so it suits most outdoor faucets with or without a phone.

Pros
- Program it at the faucet with the dial and display, no phone needed
- Bluetooth app control built in; add the Gen 2 hub (21027) for Wi-Fi
- Rated for 10 to 100 psi water pressure
- Switches itself off on low batteries rather than dying mid-run
- Two-year B-hyve warranty when bought from an authorized dealer
Cons
- Wi-Fi, remote control and weather adjustment need the hub, sold separately
- Water-resistant, not waterproof: Orbit says to dry it if water gets in
- Has to come indoors for winter; Orbit's warranty excludes freeze damage
- Best for
- One faucet feeding a hose-end sprinkler, soaker hose or drip line, where you want simple programming at the timer now and the option of Wi-Fi later.
- Not for
- Anyone who wants Wi-Fi control straight out of the box without buying a hub: Orbit's 24516 bundle or the Rachio kit includes one.
Our verdict
The B-hyve XD 1-Outlet (24511) is our best overall hose timer because it does not make you choose between buttons and an app. A dial and display on the timer set the clock, start time, run length and watering interval while you stand at the faucet, and the free B-hyve app sets the same schedule over Bluetooth.
Wi-Fi is an option rather than a requirement. Orbit’s Gen 2 hub (part 21027) adds remote control and weather-based adjustment, and Orbit says the timer and hub together are WaterSense certified; in the US the pair is also sold boxed as the 24516. Orbit rates the timer for 10 to 100 psi and a flow range of 2.5 to 9 gpm, it runs on two AA alkaline batteries, and it carries Orbit’s two-year B-hyve warranty. The trade-offs are small: the hub costs extra, the body is water-resistant rather than waterproof, and it has to come indoors for winter.
Setup and everyday use
Push the battery tray fully home after fitting the batteries: Orbit says a seated tray keeps water out and helps the cells last. At the faucet, turn the dial through Set Clock, Start Time, How Long and How Often, pressing to confirm each, then turn it to AUTO. How Often counts in days, so 1 is daily and 2 is every other day. In AUTO, holding the dial for three seconds sets a rain delay, and a single press starts a manual run that leaves the schedule alone. For Wi-Fi, the hub needs a 2.4 GHz network, and one hub can link up to 16 B-hyve devices.
Leaks, backflow and winter
For a drip at the faucet, Orbit’s help center suggests rinsing the inlet filter, checking that the cone-shaped screen washer is seated and refitting the timer hand-tight without cross-threading. Orbit also says its hose timers have no backflow preventer of their own and that one should be added. Backflow rules vary from town to town, so ask your water utility what it accepts; our guide to backflow preventers explains the device types. Before freezing weather, bring the timer, hoses and fittings indoors, take the batteries out and set the app’s run mode to Off; the timer keeps its programs. Our winterizing guide covers the rest of the yard.
Buying notes
Choose the 24516 bundle if you want Wi-Fi from day one. For two to four watering areas on one faucet, the B-hyve XD 4-Outlet works the same way. Orbit’s Canadian store lists the same 24511 but prices it in US dollars, so we show no Canadian price. We found too few independent owner reviews of this model to summarize: Orbit’s store pools every XD version, and many recent ones there were written for a discount. Orbit B-hyve XD 1-Outlet Smart Hose Timer questions
Does the B-hyve XD need Wi-Fi?
No. It runs schedules you set with the dial on the timer or over Bluetooth from the B-hyve app, which Orbit says reaches about 150 ft without interference. Wi-Fi needs Orbit’s Gen 2 hub (part 21027), which adds control from anywhere and weather-based watering. The hub joins 2.4 GHz networks only, and the older Gen 1 hub does not work with the XD.
Why did my B-hyve XD switch itself off?
Usually low batteries. Orbit says the timer turns itself to OFF at roughly 20 to 30 percent charge, so it cannot lose power halfway through a run and leave the water on. It will not return to AUTO or pair again until the batteries are replaced. Fit two fresh AA alkaline cells, then set the run mode back to Auto in the B-hyve app.
Can I leave it on the faucet over winter?
No. Orbit’s warranty does not cover freeze damage. Where winters freeze, Orbit says to take the timer, hoses and attachments off, drain them, remove the batteries and store everything somewhere warm and dry. If the timer is paired with the app, set its run mode to Off first; it keeps its programs until you switch it back to Auto in spring.
What warranty does the B-hyve XD come with?
Two years. Orbit’s help center gives a two-year warranty on all B-hyve devices bought from an authorized dealer, so keep your receipt. Freeze damage is excluded. If the timer still leaks at the faucet after you have cleaned the filter, reseated the washer and refitted it hand-tight, Orbit’s support site points you to its warranty replacement process.
