Our score: 8.6 out of 10 Research-based, not lab-tested

Updated

  • None (manual) Power
  • 24 Sprinklers or emitters
  • 100 ft Tubing included
  • 1/2 in (0.700 in) main line, plus 1/4 in branch tubing Main tubing size

Pros

  • Backflow preventer with filter and a 25 psi regulator are in the box
  • Three device types: 1 and 2 gph drippers, bubblers and micro-sprays
  • Works from as little as 15 psi at the faucet
  • Same kit (Rain Bird SKU A51230) is sold in the US and Canada

Cons

  • No timer in the box; a hose-end timer is an extra

  • Owners we read found the stiff 1/2 in main line hard to push onto fittings
Best for
Mixed beds with shrubs, flowers, pots and a small tree, watered from one outdoor faucet.
Not for
Long vegetable rows, where a dripline kit with built-in emitters is quicker to lay.

Our verdict

This is Rain Bird’s broadest drip kit for a faucet, and the only one we compared that mixes three kinds of watering device. Twenty drippers (ten 1 gph, ten 2 gph) handle pots, flowers and shrubs, two adjustable bubblers soak small trees, and four micro-sprays on stakes cover ground cover and tight beds. At the faucet it has the parts cheaper kits skip: a backflow preventer with a built-in filter, then a 25 psi regulator, ahead of the adapter onto 50 ft of 1/2 in tubing. Another 50 ft of 1/4 in tubing takes branches out to plants.

It is also the easiest of our drip picks to buy in both countries: the same kit, Rain Bird SKU A51230, is sold at Home Hardware in Canada. The gaps are no timer, no coverage area (Rain Bird counts plants instead) and a refund policy rather than a warranty in years. It leads our best drip irrigation kits; see every kit in the drip kit comparison.

Laying it out

Rain Bird asks for at least 15 psi at the faucet. Run the 1/2 in line within about 10 ft of every plant you mean to water, join it with the barbed tees, elbows and couplings, and stake it down. Plants within about 5 ft of the line take a dripper pushed straight into the main tubing; farther ones get a 1/4 in branch with the dripper near the stake. Drippers only work one way: push the pointed barb into the tubing. The bubblers adjust from 0 to 3 ft and up to 13 gph, and the micro-sprays reach up to 10 ft in half or full circles.

The backflow preventer in the box protects the faucet, but rules for irrigation backflow vary by town, so check with your water utility; our backflow preventer guide explains the options. Before winter, pull the end closure off the 1/2 in line to drain it, and see our winterizing guide for the faucet parts.

What owners report

We read eleven owner reviews on Rain Bird’s own store, leaving out reviews written for a coupon. With only one source there is no owner summary, and these lean critical. One owner found the 1/2 in main line thick and stiff, and another needed two people to push it onto the fittings at the faucet; Rain Bird’s guide suggests leaving the coils in the sun for about an hour first so they unroll more easily. One owner found the 1/4 in barbs leaked where the line was bent, one had a fitting spray each time the faucet was turned off, and one found the instructions unclear. On the other side, one called it an easy install, another used it to turn an old sprinkler riser into drip, and one found enough parts for about 20 plants.

Rain Bird Landscape and Garden kit questions

Does the Rain Bird Landscape and Garden kit need a pressure regulator?

It comes with one: a 25 psi hose regulator that fits after the backflow preventer with filter and before the tubing adapter. Rain Bird asks for at least 15 psi at the faucet. Its drip FAQ says tubing or emitters that blow off usually mean the regulator is missing or a fitting isn’t pushed fully home, so keep it in place.

Can I add a timer to this Rain Bird drip kit?

Yes. Rain Bird sells the kit as a bundle with its 2-station hose-end timer. For a first program, the guide’s watering table starts pots on 1 gph drippers at 10, 15 or 30 minutes a week for cool, warm or humid, and hot or dry climates, and trees on two 2 gph drippers at 60, 120 or 180 minutes.

How far can I run the tubing in this kit?

Rain Bird gives no maximum for this kit. Its drip FAQ, written for its dripline system, keeps 1/4 in runs to emitters under 5 ft, 1/2 in runs under 250 ft in any one direction, and total flow on one line under 240 gph; past that, start a second line. The kit guide’s own advice is to keep the 1/2 in line within about 10 ft of each plant.

Will other brands' drip fittings fit this kit?

Not always. Rain Bird warns that 1/2 in drip tubing comes in different outside diameters, and another maker’s fittings may not grip it. This kit’s main line is 0.700 in tubing, so buy fittings sized for it; Rain Bird sells matching tees, elbows, couplings and end closures, plus a repair and expansion kit (DRIPKITBAG).
