Our verdict
The X2 is Hunter’s dial-programmed timer, made in 4, 6, 8 and 14 station sizes; this one is the 8-station model with a 120 V internal transformer, a factory-fitted plug and the WAND Wi-Fi module included. On its own it runs three programs of four start times each, run times from 1 minute to 6 hours, seasonal adjust from 10 to 200 percent, a programmable rain-off period, Cycle and Soak, and a delay between stations. The IP44 plastic cabinet suits indoor or outdoor walls.
The WAND plugs in behind the X2’s Wi-Fi cover and adds Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, handing scheduling and weather adjustment to Hunter’s Hydrawise software, whose Home plan is free. Once it is fitted, the dial and buttons no longer run schedules and the dial must stay on RUN; take the WAND out and the X2 goes back to the programs set at its dial. The limits are one sensor input and no flow alerts with the WAND. EPA lists the WAND module as WaterSense labeled for X2 controllers, so the pair can qualify for utility rebates that ask for the label. Hunter gives two years of warranty on both the controller and the module.

Wiring and fault codes
Hunter’s wiring diagram uses sheathed direct-burial wire (18 AWG shown) with waterproof connectors on every splice: one common to all valves and one station wire per valve. A master valve or pump start relay goes on the P/MV output, which runs with every station unless you switch it off station by station. For a rain sensor, remove the jumper from the SEN terminals and set the sensor switch to Active. The display shows ERR with a station number for a short on that station, and P ERR for one on the pump or master valve circuit, and the hidden QuickCheck test runs through every station’s wiring in one go.
Before you buy
Hunter asks you to check Wi-Fi strength at the controller with a phone before fitting the WAND, because walls and planting can block the signal; the documents we read don’t say which Wi-Fi band the WAND uses. Hunter’s own website refuses our requests, so we read Hunter’s X2 and WAND guides as copies hosted by Sprinkler Warehouse. In Canada, Irrigation Direct sells the X2-800 with the WAND as an add-on option, so check the module is included in the price you see. We found only one owner of an X2 with the WAND on sites we can read, who describes the WAND’s Wi-Fi as patchy; that is far too few for a summary.

Hunter X2 8-Station Controller with WAND Wi-Fi Module questions
Can I still use the dial after adding the WAND?
Not for schedules. With the WAND fitted, programming moves to Hydrawise and the dial and buttons no longer run schedules; leave the dial on RUN, or the controller won’t run remotely. If you remove the WAND, the X2 goes back to the programs and settings you entered with its dial and buttons, so a dial fallback is always there.
What does ERR mean on a Hunter X2?
ERR with a station number means the controller found a short in that station’s field wiring or valve solenoid. Check the wire and the solenoid, then press any button to clear the message. P ERR points to the pump or master valve wiring and its relay, and SP ERR to electrical noise near a SmartPort device such as a remote receiver.
How do I pause a Hunter X2 for a few days of rain?
Without the WAND, use Programmable Rain Off: turn the dial to OFF, wait for the blinking to stop, set the number of days off with the + or – buttons, then turn the dial back to RUN. Watering resumes when the count reaches zero. With the WAND fitted, schedules and pauses are handled in Hydrawise instead.
Does Hydrawise cost extra with the X2?
Not for basic use. Hunter’s Hydrawise Home plan is free for up to three controllers, with app alerts and 30 days of reports. A paid Enthusiast plan adds text-message alerts, more users and a year of reports. This bundle already includes the WAND module, so there is nothing else to buy to get the X2 online.
